Highlights of Ruben Amorim’s career
As a player
Amorim was a midfielder who spent most of his career at Benfica, where he won the Portuguese league three times (2009/10, 2013/14, 2014/15). He also represented Portugal in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He retired as a player in 2017, at just 32 years old.

- Sporting CP (2020–2024): The big breakthrough. In his first full season, he led Sporting to their first league championship in 19 years (2020/21). He won a total of two Portuguese league titles (2020/21, 2023/24), two League Cups and one Super Cup . When he left the club, Sporting led the league by six points after 11 wins in 11 games – and in his last home game, they beat Manchester City 4–1 in the Champions League.
- Manchester United (November 2024 – January 2026): Led the club to the Europa League final in 2025, but the period was otherwise difficult. He was fired on January 5, 2026.
- AC Milan (since the summer of 2026): Has had a strong start in Serie A. Amorim became the first Milan manager in 63 years to go unbeaten in his first seven league games (four wins, three draws). He has shown great tactical flexibility, alternating between 3-4-2-1, 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 – contrary to the criticism he received at United for being too rigid.
The Yoro connection
Yoro was one of the players who got the most playing time under Amorim at United, and the Portuguese manager is said to be very positive about a reunion in Milan. According to reports, Yoro’s agent Jorge Mendes – who also represents Amorim – could help ease the negotiations.
