Serena Williams’ Wimbledon adventure is over – knee injury stops doubles with Venus

Serena Williams’ long-awaited Wimbledon comeback is over. The knee injury that forced her out of singles has now also put an end to doubles with her sister Venus.

The 44-year-old made his first appearance at SW19 in four years after coming out of retirement. The plan was to play doubles together with big sister Venus – one of the championship’s big draws. But Tuesday’s singles loss to Maya Joint was more expensive than anyone could have predicted.

The sisters, who have won Wimbledon six times in doubles, were forced to retire after Serena injured her knee.

In an emotional statement on Instagram, Serena wrote:

She attached a picture of the syringes showing the fluid drained from her knee after the singles match – and chuckled at the grotesque sight.

Maximum time – but there was not enough time

The Williams sisters were given all the time they needed to prove they could play. But in the end, the knee did not agree.

Serena thanked tournament director Jamie Baker and the entire Wimbledon event for giving her every opportunity to play:

What comes next for the greatest tennis player of all time? That remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: Wimbledon is losing one of its biggest names – and we’re losing one of the most iconic pairs of brothers in the history of the sport.
