Forget the traditional commentary rulebook. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has officially crossed enemy lines to pay tribute to our own captain, Martin Ødegaard in last week’s Champions League match. – A tribute that is surely good to take with you into Sunday’s away meeting at The City Ground against Nottingham Forest.
Martin Ødegaard came out of a season with injuries and varying form stronger than ever, first for Norway in the World Cup then for Arsenal in what will again be a Premier League race between them and Manchester City.
Manchester City will present “irrefutable evidence” in their appeal
After watching our Norwegian maestro come in from the bench and pick apart a stubborn Lille team in the Champions League, even the Anfield royalty couldn’t help but lift their hat to North London’s best playmaker.
Mikel Arteta may have started the evening with a few substitutions that left fans chewing their nails in a goalless first half – but the cavalry came on the hour mark and turned a frustrating European standings into pure masterclass.
The Super Substitute Symphony
Let’s be honest: the first forty-five minutes against Lille had all the creative spark of a damp fireworks display. Arsenal missed enough chances for the French defence to breathe a sigh of relief.
Then Jurrien Timber decided to take matters in his own boots with a real lightning bolt in the 64th minute, proving once again that our defenders have better finishes than half of the strikers in Europe.
Naturally, Mikel Arteta decided it was time to unleash the cheats. In came Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard – a trio guaranteed to give the opposing managers’ nightmares.
Eberechi Eze didn’t hesitate to double the lead thanks to a silky smooth assist from our Starboy, before Havertz orchestrated the attack that gave Saka a beautiful 3-0 victory.
Although captain Martin Ødegaard didn’t score directly or deliver assists for his fantasy football owners, his cameo was pure football poetry.
He completed 93 percent of his passes, created two big chances and grabbed four recoveries in just 28 minutes. Ødegaard ran the show with the laid-back brilliance of a man who plays fives on the pitch.

Gerrard, speaking to TNT Sports, practically sang the captain’s praises from the rooftops.
“Martin Ødegaard is a technical leader,” beamed the former midfielder. “I don’t think he’s the loudest, but he leads in a different way with his quality and vision, and he gives this group of players something different.
“When they can’t open the door, and they play against these diligent defensive formations, it’s the guy with the magic feeling who can find the space and open the door.
To hear an Anfield icon brag about a Gunner? Inject it right into our veins.
Nottingham Forest next: Time to unleash the magic
With only thirty million pounds from Real Madrid in 2021, the signing of Ødegaard remains the absolute bargain of the century. The 27-year-old Norwegian has already scored four goals this season, orchestrating our attack with a kind of telepathic movement that makes defenders spin in circles.
Naturally, after the midweek masterclass, the man affectionately called our blond-haired maestro, just has to go straight back to the starting eleven this weekend.
And not a moment too soon, because a difficult trip to the City Ground awaits us on Sunday. Let’s be honest: Nottingham Forest’s backyard has rarely felt like a welcoming holiday home to us in recent years – with just one meagre win on our last six visits and two consecutive frustrating goalless draws.
With Manchester City three points ahead and big favourites to increase their lead against Ipswich Town later this Saturday, the pressure on Arteta’s red and white army will be turned all the way up to eleven.
If we are to defeat Tricky Trees and keep the title hunt going, we need more than just hard work. We need exactly the kind of sorcery Gerrard was talking about.
With Ødegaard pulling the strings at number ten, it’s time for our technical wizard to unlock another stubborn defence – reminding the entire Premier League why the Emirates is the most magical place in football right now.
