Peter Schmeichel follows his old club closely. Manchester United’s best goalkeeper ever, is a voice to listen to. Where Roy Keane lashes out in front of the microphone against United without a filter, the Danish goalkeeper legend has a more balanced and analytical approach when commenting on the club in his heart. Schmeichel likes what he sees at United these days, but believes a controversial signing is needed.

“I have a signing that can be considered controversial, I think we should go out and sign Granit Xhaka,” Schmeichel begins on the podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football.

Elliot Andersson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, Aurelien Tchouameni, Alex Scott, João Gomes and Mateus Fernandes are all linked with Manchester United, but Peter Schmeichel wants to see the 33-year-old Xhaka, formerly of Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen, now Sunderland, lead United’s midfield.

“I think we have to build a team around Kobbie (Mainoo). Casemiro leaves us. Then bring in Wharton or Anderson or whoever is young. But what we really lack is proper leadership. When I see what Xhaka has done at Sunderland, I think he is the reason why they are doing so fantastic,” Schmeichel explains.

Xhaka to Old Trafford? Hmm…
