Coventry are still without a point in the Premier League this season after a terrible afternoon against Brighton.
The Sky Blues lost 5-0, and summer signing Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for a shocking elbow against Maxime De Cuyper.
It was another disappointing collapse from Coventry, who competed well for a long time in an even first half hour. But their confidence visibly disappeared when Charalampos Kostoulas gave the visitors the lead ten minutes before half-time.
Malick Yalcouyé doubled Brighton’s lead six minutes after half-time, and Coventry’s game was effectively decided by Awoniyi’s moment of madness shortly after.
Brighton showed no mercy. Pascal Gross added a third goal from the penalty spot after Bobby Thomas’ stupid foul on Kostoulas, before Lewis Dunk hammered in a spectacular fourth goal in the cross from 25 yards.
There was still time for Yasin Ayari to add a fifth goal with another brilliant shot, which sent the Seagulls up to fourth place.

After losing the first home game against Hull, between defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City, the offense lay on Frank Lampard’s side. But they started nervously and should have been down after six minutes. Jay Dasilva made a terrible clearance and the ball fell nicely to Diego Gomez – but he shot wide from 12 yards.
Ephron Mason-Clarke threatened at the other end, while Coventry’s Jack Rudoni headed over in a good position.
Rudoni came close again towards the half-hour mark, when he hit a volley well at the back post, but his shot was brilliantly saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Coventry were chasing their first Premier League goal since 2001, and it was almost three minutes later when Frank Onyeka lined up a volley, but his shot was knocked over by Verbruggen.
But just when Coventry were on top, they were caught off guard by a surprise attack at the other end. Kostoulas reacted quickest to a bouncing ball in the box, pushed it into the road and fired determinedly past Carl Rushworth.
Coventry went into half-time still in the game, but the momentum quickly swung in Brighton’s favour after half-time.
Yalcouyé increased to 2-0 for the visitors with a determined run and a calm finish, before Awoniyi then completely lost his head and swung his elbow straight into De Cuyper’s face.
The atmosphere inside the CBS Arena fell flat, and Brighton went through the gears.
Gross put the ball into the net from the penalty spot after Kostoulas was felled, Dunk hammered the ball into the crossbar, and Ayari showed clinical finishing by curling a late shot past the helpless Rushworth.
