Panathinaikos wants to return to the top of Greek football. In October 2025, the Greek club gave coaching legend Rafa Benitez the assignment, as the highest-paid coach in Greek football history. Now it is reported that it is only a short time before the Spaniard is fired.
According to De Telegraaf, Benitez earns a record sum of around €4 million a year as part of his new deal. In October, the Greek giants were in seventh place in the 14-team Greek Super League, with nine points from six games. Panathinaikos has won 20 titles in its history, but only two of them have come after the turn of the millennium, the last in 2010. Benitez was supposed to be the solution.

The plan was for the 66-year-old to lead the club to title contention, but ambitious plans often don’t work out in the short term. Panathinaikos finished fourth, 20 points behind AEK, who won the Greek championship. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before Benitez is fired.
Panos Apostolis, journalist for the Greek media Sport 24 takes a summary to Danish Bold.
– It has already been decided that Panathinaikos FC will end its collaboration with Rafa Benitez. Several reports in recent weeks have pointed in that direction, and an official announcement is expected very soon,” says the Greek journalist.
