This winter, Chelsea star Marc Cucurella complained about the composition of the Chelsea squad. All well and good with young talent, but too few experienced players (like himself) kept the club out of contention for the top spots in the Premier League. Signing young players with development potential has been a deliberate strategy of Chelsea owner BlueCo, coaches and players just had to accept that this is how it is. Then came Xabi Alonso.
The Spaniard has made the owners and club management turn their attention to established Premier League profiles. In recent weeks, there have been reports of ongoing talks with 36-year-old Jordan Henderson, with English journalist Ben Jacobs on Saturday reporting that the Liverpool legend is ready to sign with Chelsea.

On Saturday, the confirmation that Danny Welbeck is ready for Chelsea also came. Last season, the 35-year-old finished the Premier League season with 13 goals in 37 Premier League games.
With 400 Premier League games under his belt, Welbeck will give the young Chelsea squad the necessary experience and weight at the top. With Henderson and his 463 Premier League appearances under his belt, it’s clear that Xabi Alonso is the new Chelsea boss – and not just on paper.
