One would think there is some kind of curse on Oslo football. – One would think that Norway’s capital with almost a million inhabitants should dominate the Eliteserien. – That is not the case and it will not be the case this season either.
The plan was, as it always is before the season, for Vålerenga to compete for league gold and play in Europe, but as of right now it is shorter to the bottom than the top of the table.

Geir Bakke finished at Vålerenga – Petter Myhre takes over temporarily
The Oslo club confirmed on Wednesday that the collaboration with Bakke is over. The decision comes after the team has only taken one win in the last five games. Vålerenga is currently in a disappointing eleventh place in the Eliteserien. – After the 2 – 2 game against KFUM Oslo at Intility Arena on May 3, everyone saw that the promise did not come. The draw came after two losses in a row.
“The club and the head coach have recently had a good dialogue about sporting status and development, and what is the right thing for the club to ensure the best possible progression.”
Here is Geir Bakke’s farewell message!
“It’s never nice when we have to part ways”
Based on the talks, a unanimous club board has decided to terminate the contract with Bakke.
“It’s never nice when we have to part ways. As a club, we have lifted ourselves in several areas in the last two seasons. This year we have not reached the potential of the group of players, and the results are not as expected. We have already started the work of finding his replacement, says sports director Joacim Jonsson.
Bakke: “No one is separated as enemies”
Bakke was hired as head coach in the summer of 2023, and was in his fourth season. His contract originally expired next year. In the severance agreement, it is the club’s limited company that covers the costs.
Bakke himself writes the following on Vålerenga’s website:
“The strategy of the club is to become a top club that wins medals and plays in Europe. It obliges, and entails consequences.”
“But this time, the mechanisms of football hit me hard after seven league rounds, when the results don’t match expectations. The departure was done peacefully and professionally. No one is separated as enemies.”
Petter Myhre takes over immediately
Petter Myhre leads the team until a new head coach is in place.
Eleventh place after seven games is not good enough for a club with top ambitions. At the start of the season, there were victories over both Sandefjord and Rosenborg, but since then there have been five games without a win in a row – two draws and three losses.
