Chelsea have opened surprise talks with Brighton about Danny Welbeck – and new boss Xabi Alonso wants the experienced striker in ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Danny Welbeck could be on his way to Chelsea in a move that will make most people open their eyes. The London club have already begun discussions with Brighton about a transfer for the aging attacker. Negotiations between Premier League rivals are underway – with the aim of getting Welbeck ready before the start of the season.

Turned back time at Brighton
The 35-year-old Welbeck showed no signs of old age last season. He netted 14 goals and provided 2 assists across all competitions for Brighton. The impressive comeback has prompted the Chelsea management to act.
The Blues need reinforcements going forward. Joao Pedro did deliver 15 goals and 8 assists in the Premier League, but Liam Delap was a big disappointment – only one goal in 28 games. At the same time, Nicolas Jackson’s future is unclear after he returned from loan at Bayern Munich.
Routine & Leadership – Alonso’s Wish List
For new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso, experience seems to be at the top of his shopping list. Welbeck brings with him a winning mentality and routine from his years at Manchester United and Arsenal.
Alonso has previously tried to sign Granit Xhaka – and has also been linked with free agent John Stones – but failed. Now everything points to Welbeck as the solution.

Star sales and billion-kroner investment
Chelsea got off to a slow start in the transfer window, but now the lead has really picked up. In addition to the signings of Dastan Satpaev, Denner, Emmanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra, the club have recently shocked the Premier League by signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa – for a staggering £117 million.
The 22-year-old forward signed a contract that runs until 2033 and is regarded as one of the league’s most exciting youngsters.
