Arsenal’s sporting director Edu is to leave the club in a decision that has taken the Gunners by surprise.
Edu Gaspar has played a vital role in Arsenal’s recent success. The Brazilian has worked closely with Mikel Arteta to rebuild the first team squad and make the Gunners genuine contenders for the biggest prizes in the game once again.
According to the Daily Mail, the executive will step down after five years with the London club. The exact reason for this decision is still unknown. However, one possible explanation is that the club has made some adjustments in the hierarchy of responsibilities.
Edu was appointed to his post in the summer of 2019, just a few months before Arteta’s arrival. Since then the pair have transformed the club, and supported one another. Edu backed Arteta through tough times, and the duo have developed a close working relationship.
It is reported that the news of Edu Gaspar’s departure has been a major blow for Mikel Arteta and the club. Last season, Arsenal and Manchester City competed for the title, and Edu Gaspar is considered one of the key figures who made that possible.
As reported by the Daily Mail, “Talks have been ongoing with the club’s hierarchy and while the reasons are currently unclear, it is his decision to go. More details are expected to emerge in the next 24 hours.”
At this stage, of course, it is unclear as to who might succeed the former Arsenal midfielder in his position at the club.
In the last round, Arsenal lost to Newcastle. Overall, Mikel Arteta’s team has had a rocky start to the season, with only five wins, two losses, and three draws in ten rounds.
