Manchester United have had more than their fair share of transfer misses in recent years. Antony’s transfer to the club is definitely one of those that didn’t work out.

The Brazilian had a tough time at Old Trafford after he joined the club in a staggering deal worth €95 million back in 2022.

According to Transfermarkt, United paid €60 million too much for the player, as they only valued him at €35 million at the time of the transfer. – Antony now plays for Real Betis after a transfer worth €25 million.

Brought in by his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, Antony was unable to replicate his former form under the Dutchman – and in the end, he became the club’s most overpriced signing ever.

Despite his troubles in Manchester, Antony, who now plays for Spanish side Real Betis, helped the Red Devils win both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

When it came to his performances on the pitch, he really struggled to make a significant difference in the final third – having contributed just 12 goals and five assists in 96 games.

Before his move to Manchester United, the winger was close to signing for Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, but a transfer never materialised.

Antony opens up about Liverpool’s transfer interest

Now that he is making an impression for Betis in LaLiga, the 26-year-old reflected last year on his time at Manchester United – admitting that he “takes responsibility” for it not working out.

“Look, I don’t think so, because everything has a ‘why’. If I went there, it was because God wanted me to be there, to learn and go through the things I was going through,” he said in an interview with ESPN Brazil (via Manchester Evening News).

“Today I feel like a much better man, as well as a father. Before I signed for United, yes, I was close to signing for Liverpool. Everything has a ‘why’ and I don’t just look at the negative times I had there, because I also won titles and had good experiences.

“So I have no regrets. I’m a man who accepts my responsibilities. I think things off the pitch affected me a lot, in my performances. I know my potential, I know my qualities – I didn’t play in a World Cup for nothing, I didn’t come back to the national team for nothing.

“I also take responsibility for the fact that it didn’t work out, for not performing as I wanted. But I always try to see the bright side of things. Going through this whole process, this time at United, was necessary to see myself.”
