The 19-year-old Brazilian was in the spotlight during the match. He assisted Afonso Moreira in the penalty that made it 2-1, before he himself made it 4-2 with his right foot fifteen minutes before the end.

Moreira also had a brilliant night – the former Sporting player was on fire and gave Fonseca invaluable help in the fight for the Champions League.

“I do as God says”

With only two games left of his loan spell, the big question about his future was asked in interviews after the game. Endrick replied in both French and Portuguese:

“I do what God tells me. Whether it’s to stay here, to return to Real Madrid – or go somewhere else. What he tells my wife to do. If I have to stay at Lyon, I’ll be happy to stay,” he said.

The win lifted Lyon up to third place in Ligue 1 – a position that ensures direct entry to the Champions League next season. Lyon now leads with two points on fourth-placed Lille. In France, it is believed that qualification for the billion-dollar tournament could be crucial to convincing the attacker to stay at the club.

“No regrets”

Endrick currently has eight goals and seven assists in 19 games (17 starts) for Lyon. To the Ligue 1 channel, he added:

“If I have to return to Real Madrid, I will. If Real wants to send me somewhere else, I’ll leave. But it is God’s decision that will tell me what I should do.

“I was very well received by the coaching staff, by the ‘mister’ (Paulo Fonseca) and all my teammates. I experience very nice things here. I don’t regret anything I’ve done. I’m glad I made this decision.

“If I am selected for the World Cup, I thank all the people who have stood by me.
