The experienced footballer currently plays for AC Milan, but could envision a return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Luka Modric, a 41-year-old midfielder for AC Milan, is once again in the spotlight of Real Madrid news after hinting at the possibility of working for the “Merengues” once his football career is over. The Croatian expressed his wish after Croatia’s loss to Spain, and he stressed that a possible return would also depend on whether the white club is interested.

Currently, there are no negotiations on his entry into the Madrid structure. Modric has a contract with Milan until June 30, 2027, and his priority remains on his playing career before deciding on his next professional step.
Luka Modric wants to return to Real Madrid with a specific role
The relationship between Luka Modric and Real Madrid didn’t end with his departure in 2025. The midfielder once again pointed to the white club as the one that has had the biggest impact on his career, admitting that he would like to return after he retires.
However, his intention does not just involve holding a position because of his history. Modric stated in September that if he were to return, he would do so with specific responsibilities, with the aim of contributing directly to the club.
He was referring to an idea implemented by José Mourinho since his return to the bench: to work for Real Madrid and not just have a position within their structure.
His sporting ties to the club explain this opportunity. Modric played 597 games during his 13 seasons at Madrid, scoring 43 goals and winning 28 titles, including six Champions League trophies and four league titles.
AC Milan keep Modric until June 2027
Before considering a return to Spain, Modric is still focused on AC Milan. The Italian club extended his contract for another season this summer, and his contract now expires on June 30, 2027.
In his first season in Italy, he made 37 appearances and scored two goals, which led Milan to extend his stay. Modric turned 41 on September 9, but has yet to publicly set a definitive retirement date.
The midfielder also continues his international activity with Croatia. He took part in the 1-2 loss to Spain in Split in the Nations League and reiterated after the game that he still has the motivation to keep playing.
The decision will of course also depend on Real Madrid, but they know Luka Modric’s qualities
Therefore, Luka Modric’s return does not depend solely on his own will. The player himself admits that it will be necessary to understand Real Madrid’s plans and see if there is a position within their structure that fits with his goals when he ends his playing career.
Currently, no discussions are known about a specific role or a date to begin this possible return. The next step will come when Modric decides to retire – which is unlikely to happen before his current contract with Milan expires in June 2027.
Until then, Luka Modric will continue to play in Italy and evaluate his future season by season. Once he retires, Real Madrid will have to decide whether to turn the Croatian’s publicly expressed desire into a concrete proposal to bring him into the club’s structure.
