Julián Álvarez was the summer’s big soap opera at Camp Nou – but now it’s over. Barcelona have definitely shelved their pursuit of the Atlético striker, after the red-and-white club repeatedly said no.
According to José Álvarez at El Chiringuito , the difficulties in negotiating with Atlético have meant that Barça have finally given up on a deal they tried to get done for weeks.

The decision marks a definitive shift in Barcelona’s offensive planning. Álvarez was among the hottest names on the wish list – but Atlético Madrid have been adamant throughout the process that they would not strengthen a direct La Liga rival. That opposition has finally closed the door on the Argentine’s path to Camp Nou.
Atlético got on their hind legs
The main obstacle to a transfer was Atlético’s position. Álvarez has a contract until June 30, 2030 – with a buyout clause of a staggering €500 million. This gave Atlético full control over the timing and conditions of a possible sale.
Barcelona have reportedly tried to find a solution, and there has been talk of a bid of 100 million euros – 90 million fixed plus 10 million in variables. But that didn’t change Atlético’s attitude. The rejection also had a sporting justification: selling Álvarez to Barça would mean strengthening a direct competitor in the league.
Even the player’s own desire was not enough to unlock the deal. Álvarez had publicly expressed a desire to leave Atlético this summer, with Barcelona as a clear favourite. The Argentine joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to €95 million.
Barcelona must find new solutions
The outcome now forces Barcelona to adjust their priorities in the closing stages of the window. The club has been working with Álvarez for weeks as a main option in the striker position, but Atlético’s rejection now removes that possibility.
Álvarez played 29 LaLiga games in 2025/26, with 8 goals and 4 assists. The 26-year-old has four years left on his contract with Atlético.
The next move lies with Barcelona. With the signing of Álvarez called off under the current conditions, sporting directors must now decide whether to go for another option to bolster the attack before the window closes – or go for the attackers Hansi Flick already has available.
