According to information from The Athletic, Barcelona could be heading into one of the most complicated situations this summer. Marc-André ter Stegen is not part of Hansi Flick’s plans for next season.

There is reason to believe that Barcelona are preparing for a tough period related to the goalkeeper position, as several unresolved situations now collide at the same time.

The biggest problem revolves around Ter Stegen, who is back at Camp Nou this weekend.

The German goalkeeper will return to the club in the summer after a disappointing loan spell at Girona, where his season quickly unravelled due to injury problems. Ter Stegen suffered a serious hamstring injury in his third game, which has added to the concern after the serious knee injury he had already sustained the year before.

The future is very uncertain

Inside Barcelona, there is now growing uncertainty about what will happen next.

According to the report, Flick does not currently see the 34-year-old goalkeeper as part of his long-term project. Nevertheless, resolving the situation will be far from easy.

The reason is that Ter Stegen still has two years left on his contract and is still one of the highest-paid players in the squad – which complicates a possible exit strategy considerably.

At the same time, there are doubts across Europe about how many elite clubs are willing to bet big on a goalkeeper who comes from two serious injuries and a long time on the sidelines.

Crucial elections await

Furthermore, Barcelona’s goalkeeper situation is becoming increasingly crowded.

Wojciech Szczęsny has expressed that he wants to stay at the club, although he understands that he will probably start next season as a reserve for Joan García.

Meanwhile, Iñaki Peña is back after his loan spell, while young keepers such as Ander Astralaga and Aron Yaakobishvili are also expected back in the club’s system.

With the planning for the 2026/27 season now being made, one thing has become clear: no matter what happens to the other goalkeepers, Ter Stegen will not be counted on.
