In January, Andy Robertson was suddenly heavily linked with Tottenham. This was in the last week of the transfer window, Thomas Frank needed a veteran who had cracked all the codes in the Premier League. The Scot wisely stayed at Anfield to end the final months of his Liverpool contract in style, Tottenham have since sunk like a stone towards the bottom of the table. There are reports of a deal between Robertson and the London club, on the condition of survival in the Premier League, but now one of the semi-finalists in the Champions League is moving in to get the Liverpool legend to “think better”.

Robertson is still on the boil, on Saturday he thundered up the pitch and scored masterfully against Crystal Palace, 15 seconds after Liverpool goalkeeper Woodman had saved a Palace attack. That the Scotland international still has ambitions, there is no doubt about that either.

Earlier this month, hyperactive transfer journalist Romano made a: “According to my information, there is already an agreement on everything between Robertson and Tottenham in this case, depending on Premier League status, and that will be a decisive step.”

So then it is a question of whether Tottenham will save their place in the Premier League, or not?

Not according to the Daily Record. The Scottish media claim that Atletico Madrid have thrown themselves into the race for Liverpool’s left-back, despite the fact that there is reportedly a deal between Robertson and Spurs. The Scottish football terrier is the type of player Diego Simeone loves, the Argentine has had plenty of close encounters with Liverpool and Robertson in the Champions League.

The Atletico Madrid management knows Robertson still has ambitions for the biggest titles. With a Champions League semi-final ticket after beating Barcelona, plus a Champions League ticket for the coming season, Atletico are showing that they are a club that can offer the Liverpool legend something completely different from what he gets at Tottenham.

We’re guessing Liverpool supporters would rather not have to face their Robbo next season in the Premier League, so a move outside of the Premier League would be a choice to be applauded.
