From Brentford legend to hot wanted coach

Thomas Frank has built a strong reputation in English football. He took over Brentford in 2018 and led the club to promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 74 years in 2021. Since then, he has kept the club safely placed in the top flight – far beyond all expectations – with his distinctive, data-driven approach and ability to develop players. After a brief but memorable spell at Tottenham, the Dane is now back in the running for several clubs.

Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Fulham – and most recently Chelsea and Celtic – are some of the destinations Thomas Frank has been linked to. But now Championship club Birmingham are also being dragged into the picture by Football Insider.

The English media reports that the club, which is owned by legend Tom Brady, among others, has already made contact with Thomas Frank – and that they are going “all-in” to get the Danish coach.

Birmingham believe in Frank as the promotion guarantor

Birmingham strongly believe that Thomas Frank, with his solid experience at the top level, is the right man to lead the club up to the Premier League – and not least keep them there. In addition, Birmingham wants to copy Brentford’s famous, data-driven recruitment model, which Frank naturally knows inside out.

Chris Davies has been in charge of Birmingham since the summer of 2024. But after a season in which he failed to lead the club to the play-off places in the Championship, the pressure is now mounting on the 41-year-old manager.

Can Frank be lured to Birmingham?

The big question is whether Thomas Frank can even be persuaded to take the step down to the Championship. So far, the club has made contact, and they are said to be willing to go to great lengths – both sportingly and financially – to get the Dane to put his signature on the contract. The question is whether Frank himself is just as interested.

He knows from experience how tough it is to lift a club up from the Championship. – And next season will not be any easier.
