Chelsea’s board shifted its focus to Barrios after Monaco’s intransigence in negotiations for Lamine Camara. Coach Xabi Alonso has asked to bring in the Madrid-born midfielder to form a double pivot alongside Moisés Caicedo for the second half of the 2026/27 season.
The 23-year-old is under contract with Atlético Madrid until June 2030 and has a buyout clause of 500 million euros. However, the British bid of 100 million euros is intended to open up direct negotiations with the Madrid board – without having to trigger the clause.
How Barrios fits in at Chelsea
Chelsea’s interest in Barrios stems from the need for an immediate organisational profile in midfield in the Premier League. The sale of Enzo Fernández left a financial surplus that the London club will spend almost exclusively on signing Barrios – a player developed in Atlético’s own academy.
Atlético Madrid are not yet willing to release their own product in the middle of the season. But any bid that reaches triple digits will force the Spanish management to consider the financial impact before the window opens.
Negotiations underway
Chelsea management will begin informal talks with the player’s closest circle in November 2026. The aim is to agree on personal contract terms by January 1, 2027 – and then negotiate directly with Atlético Madrid about a final transfer.
