Alexis Mac Allister is once again in the spotlight at Liverpool after a statement from Dominik Szoboszlai about leadership in the dressing room. The Hungarian used the phrase “if he comes back” – and now the speculation is flaring up again.
The Argentine midfielder, 27 years old, has been the subject of transfer rumours earlier this summer. But the statement from Szoboszlai has given new life to the debate – even though Liverpool have not communicated any change in his situation.

Szoboszlai’s words come amid a deep restructuring of the Liverpool squad under the new coaching staff. The Hungarian midfielder mentioned several players who are expected to take on leadership roles – and when he came to Mac Allister, he dropped a sentence that didn’t go unnoticed.
Mac Allister and Szoboszlai – the comment that sparks debate
During his speech, Szoboszlai listed the players with the greatest influence in the dressing room. Among the names were Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz – and Alexis Mac Allister.
The attention was focused on the Argentine – because the Hungarian referred to him conditionally: He would take on the role “if he comes back”. The choice of words has been interpreted by various players as a hint that Mac Allister has still not secured his immediate future at Liverpool – although there is no official confirmation of negotiations.
The comment comes at a time when Mac Allister has been linked with several big European clubs, especially after the World Cup. At the same time, Anfield has publicly expressed that the Argentine is a key player in the sporting project.
Liverpool’s position
So far, Liverpool have shown no intention of opening up a transfer. On the contrary, manager Andoni Iraola has recently stated that he expects Mac Allister ahead of the new season and wants to keep both the midfielder and Alisson Becker.
Mac Allister’s contract with Liverpool runs until 2028, and there have been no confirmed negotiations for an extension recently. This has led to constant rumours about his future in the summer window.
At the same time, Szoboszlai has just extended his involvement with Liverpool through a new long-term contract – and established himself as one of the central figures in the new sporting cycle.
Currently, there are no official bids for Alexis Mac Allister, and Liverpool have not announced any negotiations for a transfer. Szoboszlai’s statements have nevertheless added a new element to a market where the Argentine remains one of the most talked about names.
The next step depends on whether a bid for the midfielder emerges – or if Liverpool definitively confirm his continuity before the transfer window closes.
