Everton and Aston Villa progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup with victories on Wednesday night.
Everton beat the challenge of recently relegated Wolves at home thanks to a late goal from Charly Alcaraz, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham in the crowd.

Abraham gave a timely reminder of his quality to manager Unai Emery with a decisive double goal for Villa.
After turning down a £65m summer loan following Nicolas Jackson’s arrival, Abraham opened the scoring after seven minutes. Although Victor Torp briefly equalised with a sublime free-kick from 25 yards, Coventry’s defensive weaknesses returned. Ross Barkley headed in an unmarked header before half-time, and Abraham secured advancement just before the hour mark by slotting in John McGinn’s corner – condemning the struggling Sky Blues to their fifth defeat in six games.
At the Hill Dickinson Stadium, David Moyes’ Everton were repeatedly stopped by former Toffees goalkeeper João Virgínia, who brilliantly denied Thierno Barry. However, the breakthrough came in the 80th minute, when substitute Alcaraz snuck into the box and netted his first goal for the club in 13 months.
The shock of the round came at a wet and windy Highbury Stadium, where Fleetwood made club history when Rhys Norrington-Davies inadvertently headed Danny Andrews’ cross into his own net.
