Anthony Martial is reportedly closing in on a move to La Liga club Málaga, after turning down a “completely beyond proposal” from another club in an attempt to revive his career.

Martial became a free agent in June after his contract with Mexican club Monterrey was terminated by mutual agreement.
The French striker scored just one goal in 20 appearances for the club, having arrived there in June 2025 – after a season in Greece with AEK Athens, where he scored nine times in 24 games.

Martial was once one of the most talented Premier League strikers at Manchester United, but the 30-year-old is now looking to rebuild his career after a difficult few years.
Over the summer, the former France international turned down “regular offers” from two Ligue 1 clubs – according to Foot Mercato – because there were no significant guarantees of regular playing time.
Everton were even given the opportunity to sign Martial after failing to sign a striker before the window closed, although they were consistently unlikely to take that chance. Now, it seems that LaLiga side Málaga are willing to take a chance on the speedy striker.
Foot Mercato revealed that he is in “advanced negotiations” over a return to LaLiga – having previously been on loan at Sevilla in the 2021/22 season – and the report adds that he could sign for the Spanish club in “the coming days”.
Remarkably, the French media even claimed that Libyan club Al-Ittihad Tripoli offered Martial one that included a net salary of €10 million (£8.6 million) over two years, with a staggering €5 million (£4.3 million) signing bonus.
Martial turned down the opportunity to earn a whopping £12.9 million until the autumn of 2028 – clear proof that he prioritises a genuine project where he can showcase his talent in Europe, rather than going to a club just for financial gain.
Málaga currently sit 18th in LaLiga after their promotion last season, with three draws and two losses in their first five games. The addition of the former Man United superstar could prove to be a master move that helps them avoid relegation.
How Anthony Martial can revive his career
At various points during his Man United career, Martial was invincible with his lightning-fast speed, clever movements, and elite-level finishing.
The 2019/20 season was arguably his most impressive at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals in 32 games in the top flight, while his four goals in the Europa League helped United reach the semi-finals.
Martial has long looked like a shadow of that player, but at the age of 30, he still has at least a few years left to become a prominent star in Europe.
That could start with a move to Málaga, where he is likely to be a guaranteed starter for a team battling relegation – although he still needs to prove himself after failing to deliver in Mexico.
A move to La Liga would likely suit Martial’s attributes perfectly, as attackers have more time and space in the final third to make decisions, and he can use his speed to cause problems for the opposing defence.
For the Frenchman, proving that he still has the mentality to compete in one of Europe’s top five leagues is just as important as showing his talent – as many Man United fans hope he can return to his best.
