Everton continue their pursuit of Celtic defender Alistair Johnston, but sources close to the negotiations report that there is still a lot of work to be done before a transfer can become a reality.
Everton are still very interested in the 27-year-old, and Johnston himself is said to be positive about a move to Goodison Park. So far, however, the clubs have not been able to agree on a financial package.

Celtic are adamant about their valuation and are demanding around £15 million in total. Everton have not yet shown a willingness to match that amount – which has put talks on hold.
The Scottish champions are determined to get maximum value for a player who has become a mainstay in the squad. They are willing to wait rather than accept a lower bid.
Personal terms no obstacle
Despite the disagreement over the transfer fee, it is not expected that the personal part of the agreement will be a problem. Johnston is said to be fully committed to the transfer and ready to sign with Everton as soon as the clubs agree.
David Moyes’ side see the Canadian as a solid reinforcement and continue to look for solutions to make the math add up.
Negotiations drag on
The ongoing dialogue between Everton and Celtic shows that the interest is mutual, but also that the gap is still significant. We have reported throughout the summer that a new right-back is one of Everton’s priorities, and Johnston has identified himself as the number one target.
Moyes is a big admirer of the Canadian – especially his energy, aggression and intensity on the pitch.
But Celtic are not under any acute pressure to sell, and will only approve a departure if the price meets their demands. Johnston has a contract until 2029.
Alternatives in the pipeline – but Johnston first
With no breakthrough in recent days, the situation remains unresolved and may require further moves by either party.
Everton have other options if the deal doesn’t go through – such as RB Leipzig’s Ridle Baku – but sources indicate that Johnston is still the far more likely addition at this point.
For now, the focus is on bridging the valuation gap. If Everton improve their bid, the road to a completed transfer will be relatively short – given the player’s will and the lack of personal complications.
