Rafael Benitez led Liverpool to the Champions League title in the 2004/05 season. For this, the Spaniard will forever and forever be a legend at Anfield. It was with shock that Liverpool fans saw Benitez take over the coaching job at city rivals Everton in 2021, but when the Spaniard was sacked already in 2022 after leading Everton further into the sporting mud, it was not so important. What Benitez now recommends Trent Alexander-Arnold about, it will be tougher to digest.
Benitez has managed both Real Madrid and Liverpool, so answers to questions about which club Alexander-Arnold should choose when he can walk out as a free agent this summer are wrong anyway. Still, Benitez could diplomatically steer clear, but chooses to speak his mind. A piece of advice for the Liverpool star to choose Real Madrid.
“He’s an attacking defender and he plays as a midfielder sometimes, Real Madrid is an attacking team, they’re the best team in Spain and they will [continue to] be the best team in Spain,” Benitez told Sky Sports.
“Even if Barcelona or Atletico Madrid do well, Real Madrid still have the potential, so they will always be there. For an attacking defender in an offensive team, you have more chances to provide assists and create situations in attack that will be good for him as a player,” Benitez continues.
“He does it at Liverpool, so it’s not a surprise, but with Real Madrid you can guarantee that he will do it for years,” Benitez concluded.
