Andoni Iraola is well established at Anfield and shows he has the potential to lead Liverpool to further success. The Spaniard is now well acquainted with the players and their potential, now it is reported that a midfielder on his way out has ended up on the Liverpool manager’s favourites list.

It is about Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine had a remarkable dip in form last season, but has recently explained that Arne Slot’s football contributed to this. This season, Mac Allister is back as one of Liverpool’s most important and best-producing players, but with his contract expiring in the summer of 2028 and with no signs of contract extension talks, the Argentine has been reported to be on his way out after the end of the season. According to English journalist David Lynch, Liverpool have now turned things around, with initial talks over a contract extension underway, with Iraola pushing for a continuation with the Argentine.

“I dare say it’s pretty good source material, so it’s interesting, and I think there will be a change in attitude towards Liverpool if that turns out to be the case, because Mac Allister himself said they didn’t plan to offer him another deal, and that’s the way it was,” Lynch begins.

-So maybe his level of performance, Iraola’s good start, increases his influence already to be able to say ‘I have to keep this guy’. Of course, we are still a long way off in terms of what it looks like.”

As for the contract itself, Lynch suggests that since Mac Allister turns 28 in December, and has already shown signs of a slump, albeit temporary, decline, Liverpool will look to tie in a shorter extension if possible.

“I don’t think Liverpool will offer him five years or anything like that,” he said. “I think they will protect themselves here. Do they give him a couple more years, is there a way they can sort it out? It will be interesting to see… There’s no doubt he’s playing at an incredibly high level at the moment. He’s the one who seems to get the manager’s instructions the most, and he’s a real leader for him on the pitch as well.” So, if you can get something shorter, and I’m just speculating on that, you’d probably be in favour,” Lynch said.

Lynch concludes by suggesting that the changes in circumstances at Liverpool this summer could work in Mac Allister’s favour, with Iraola’s influence, as well as the influence of new sporting director Julian Ward – who was key to bringing him to Anfield in 2023 – which together give him hope of staying with the Reds when it appeared to be lost, Lynch concludes.

We’re guessing that a lot of Liverpool supporters will be happy that Liverpool and Mac Allister can still find their way forward together.
