The billionaire founder of Amazon has been in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool FC, and a deal with the consortium led by Amit Bhatia could be announced as early as this week.
A consortium led by Amit Bhatia, along with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is now nearing an agreement to buy a significant stake in Liverpool. According to sources, the share is said to be “about a third” of the club.

Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirm that a group has approached them to buy a stake in the club – and that it is Bhatia who is spearheading the initiative. In a statement, FSG writes:
“An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.
The world’s richest men step in
According to Sky News, the deal means that Jeff Bezos will join an investor group that also includes Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook. The consortium is led by Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal – and who until recently was a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
The report states that FSG, which has been the club’s controlling shareholder since 2010, is preparing to announce the transaction “as early as this week”. While an update is expected in the next few days, it’s also suggested that the timeline could “slide over to next week.”
If the deal goes through, a trio of the world’s richest men will become co-owners of Liverpool – one of English football’s most successful clubs.
Bezos’ fortune is estimated by Forbes to be worth over $280 billion (£207 billion), while Saverin is said to be worth more than $32 billion (£23 billion). The investor trio’s deposit is said to have valued Liverpool at around $6 billion (£4 billion) – making this one of the richest deals in sports history.
American dominance in the Premier League
There has been a marked increase in American involvement in the Premier League, and half of the 20 clubs are now mainly owned by investors from the United States.
Bezos has previously explored major sports investments – including in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders – but ultimately chose not to go for any of the bids.
Saverin, for his part, was part of a consortium that attempted to buy Chelsea FC during the 2022 auction, triggered by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. However, that bid did not end with any purchase.
From rescue operation to gigantic value
FSG, which also owns MLB giants Boston Red Sox, has been the manager of Liverpool since 2010. Then they saved the club from the brink of administration – after the former American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett had driven the club towards a financial plunge.
On the pitch, Liverpool last won the Premier League title in 2024/25, but are now facing a transition season following the sacking of head coach Arne Slot and the departure of Mohamed Salah.
So far this summer, Liverpool have signed Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Muñoz and Ronald Araujo on loan – but with Bezos and co on their way in, the future at Anfield could look completely different.
