Arne Slot made history with Liverpool in the 2024/25 season, but is himself history at Anfield the following year. The Dutchman is still paid by Liverpool until the summer of 2027, but of course does not have a “duty to attend” in the office. An absurd situation that is reserved for the world of football. So it is the Liverpool management who will give the green light for Slot to take a new coaching job. This light is now lit.

In the past week, the former Liverpool and Feyenoord manager has been a strong candidate to replace Ronald Koeman as Dutch national team manager, but even with real interest, a deal has been conditional on Liverpool giving the green light for the sacked coach – who will receive compensation until next summer – to find a new employer.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Liverpool are prepared to do just that. One of the reasons is that Liverpool have offered to supplement Arne Slot’s salary to the level he would otherwise have earned at the helm of the Premier League club. This will save Liverpool several million, equivalent to the wages paid by the Netherlands.

Liverpool management has reportedly told Slot that they do not want to stand in the way of his ability to move forward in his career, after his extremely professional handling of a relatively surprising dismissal. If Slot had switched to a direct competitor in the Premier League, Liverpool’s attitude would certainly have been different.

It is therefore probably with some relief that Arne Slot is now seeking to leave club football and enter the national team arena.
