Liverpool will NOT follow up on the heavily rumoured signing on the wings, and Chelsea are thus free to secure the deal themselves – if they can overcome Bayern Munich.
Liverpool are planning to spend big money on one, and potentially two, new wingers in the summer. Mohamed Salah must be replaced, as the Egyptian icon disappears on a free transfer – despite still having one year left on his contract. Federico Chiesa also has real opportunities to leave the club.

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is the main target at Anfield. The Reds are not intimidated by Leipzig’s huge valuation, which now stands at over 100 million euros.
Gordon has long been linked with Liverpool
If a new signing is needed, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon – who is a Liverpool fan from childhood and was in the club’s youth department before joining Everton’s system – has been heavily linked with the club.
Bayern Munich are also in the race for Gordon, who Newcastle are open to selling in the summer. Bids of around £70 million will be seriously considered, as Newcastle prepare to sell away to fund the next phase of their own rebuild.
According to BILD journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool’s interest in Gordon will be a “problem” for Bayern. It’s been less than a year since the Reds snatched Florian Wirtz – one of Germany’s biggest talents – right under Bayern’s nose when he left Bayer Leverkusen.
In addition, our insider, Fraser Fletcher, recently revealed that in a direct match between Liverpool and Bayern, Gordon would choose Liverpool.
Liverpool withdraws – The Athletic: Plans shelved
However, according to a recent update from The Athletic, Liverpool have downplayed their interest in Gordon. They no longer have any intention of bringing Gordon back to Anfield.
The Athletics report is quoted:
“Liverpool have had a strong interest in Gordon in the past, but have no plans to revive that interest this summer.
– When Newcastle struggled with PSR issues in June 2024, a potential sale of Gordon to Liverpool, his childhood club, was launched.
“According to sources, a deal was agreed that Gordon would go to Liverpool for £75 million, while Joe Gomez went the opposite way for £45 million.
– Newcastle pulled out of that deal, and instead sold Elliot Anderson (to Nottingham Forest for £35 million) and Yankuba Minteh (to Brighton for £30 million).
Bayern and Chelsea in the match – Champions League not decisive for Chelsea
This opens the door wide open for Bayern – but another Premier League giant must also be taken seriously: Chelsea.
The Athletic notes that Chelsea were hoping to sign Gordon when he left Everton for Newcastle in the summer of 2023. Chelsea interest has remained steady, and with the club now looking to sign established Premier League players as part of a broader strategic shift, interest is stronger than ever.
And in a further boost for Chelsea fans who want to see Gordon at Stamford Bridge, it is emphasized that Chelsea’s move will NOT depend on Champions League qualification – something they currently seem to be missing out on.
