Dutch centre-back Matthijs de Ligt hasn’t exactly been in the “flow zone” since he came to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich just a few years ago in a deal worth €45 million.
The bosses of Manchester United have been a little blind to that number as we now enter the summer transfer market. Manager Michael Carrick does not have Matthijs de Ligt as a priority player for next season, which opens up the possibility of a sale.

Villarreal dream of Matthijs de Ligt to compete in La Liga
Villarreal appears to be a very interesting option. The club from Castellon wants to strengthen its defense for a demanding season. The fact that they are in the Champions League changes everything. Villarreal need depth, leadership and players who are used to performing under pressure.
Villerreal have just finished a brilliant season, they are qualified for the Champions League after finishing 3rd in La Liga, which by the way is the same place as Manchester United, almost miraculously landed in the Premier League.
Matthijs de Ligt would fit both in name and out of necessity. His arrival would raise the competitive level in a squad that aims to establish itself among the very best. Nevertheless, the approach must be innovative. In LaLiga, the financial margin requires creative and sustainable solutions.
The most attractive option involves a loan. Villarreal could try to include a favorable purchase option, of a maximum of €20 million. This sum would be very advantageous for the Spanish club. For Manchester United, on the other hand, it would mean a significant reduction compared to the initial investment.
La Liga can revive a centre-back who needs confidence.
LamLiga could be an ideal stage for Matthijs de Ligt. The Spanish championship requires focus, clean play and constant defensive reading of the game. In England, he has experienced an uneven period. The Premier League’s pace, injuries and constant project changes have prevented him from establishing himself properly.
Villarreal can offer him something else: stability, playing time and a less hectic environment than Old Trafford. For the player, this can be absolutely crucial. There is also a strong sporting argument. Competing in the Champions League with an aspiring club would allow him to regain visibility without taking a step back.
Matthijs de Ligt needs to feel important. Belonging to a giant club is not enough if the coach does not see him as a key piece.
Manchester United want to streamline their squad.
Manchester United are facing a summer of tough decisions. Carrick continues as coach, and the sports management wants to trim a squad that is far too burdened. A sale of Matthijs de Ligt fits into this strategy. It would free up labor costs and make room for profiles that fit better with the new plan.
The challenge will be to find a compromise. Villarreal cannot compete with large sums of money, but they can offer an attractive project. In LaLiga, the centre-back would have had a real opportunity to rebuild his reputation. It would not be just any signing, but a move with great impact.
The yellow club knows that such operations require patience. First, they will have to see if Manchester United are willing to lower their demands or agree to a loan. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt faces an important decision: stay at Manchester United without guarantees, or accept the challenge of Villarreal in LaLiga.
