Enzo Maresca wants to reunite with one of his former Chelsea players – and this time it’s a player who has barely been on the pitch for over four months.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly looking to sign a forgotten Chelsea star – a player he himself worked with at Stamford Bridge.

Marescas City’s Premier League season started with a win against Marco Rose’s Bournemouth on Sunday, after late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol that turned 1-0 into 2-1.

City were far from at their best – Maresca started with six defenders after Rodri left the club, and Tottenham current Omar Marmoush was not even in the squad despite being listed as a substitute.

City’s record signing Elliot Anderson started alongside Nico O’Reilly in the middle, and it looks like Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi will soon join City as City have agreed a £86m transfer with Lille.

Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has also left this summer – to Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah for £52 million – and Maresca wants to replace him with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández by the September 1 deadline.

Wants to bring in striker he knows well

But the Italian will also strengthen the attack, and according to TEAMtalk, the former Chelsea boss wants to bring Spanish Marc Guiu to the Etihad this season.

Journalist Graeme Bailey says the following:

“Guiu is one of several Chelsea players City are considering in the final week of the window. Sources have already confirmed interest in Enzo Fernández and Malo Gusto – now these three are among the players the Premier League champions are considering.

“Guiu worked well under Maresca at Chelsea, and we understand that this particular relationship is one of the reasons why City have explored the possibility.

“The club also believes that the 20-year-old can develop into a good replacement for Erling Braut Haaland – and give City a young option with depth in the striker position.

“However, the 20-year-old has several options. Napoli have also made contact, and RB Leipzig have considered bringing him in as part of their own attack planning.

Hasn’t scored in the Premier League – and has been out of the squad for 125 days

Guiu is a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, and joined Chelsea during Maresca’s time. Since then, he has had great problems playing his way into Stamford Bridge.

In fact, he has only made 29 appearances for Chelsea in over two seasons – seven of them in the Conference League. He has yet to score a single Premier League goal for the club, and is far down the line under Xabi Alonso.

Guiu was loaned to Sunderland at the start of the 2025/26 season, but was recalled after just three games for the Black Cats – due to an injury crisis in Chelsea’s attacking line.

The Spaniard is under contract with Chelsea until 2029, but with zero goals and 125 days without game time, a move to City could be just what he needs to get his career back on track.
