transfer market

With Benjamin Sesko struggling with injury, there have been signals that Manchester United will have to go out in the January transfer window to cover for the striker position. Crystal Palace player Jean-Philippe Mateta has been on United’s radar for the past year and looked like a natural choice. Now there are signals that United are opting out of this plan, they need to focus on another precarious situation.

The most important Man Utd signings during the summer all came in midfield, while other positions, especially left-back and striker, were overlooked. The BBC recently revealed that Man Utd internally view the decision not to add these positions this summer as “wrong”.

According to Teamtalk’s Graeme Bailey, United were planning to sign the striker as early as January, transfer journalist Romano backed this up with the Red Devils planning to “attack” the January window, with more signings possible.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, this plan has now changed, with Man Utd not going to sign a striker, only defenders in January: “Manchester United will postpone strengthening elsewhere as they prioritise defensive signings in January. Despite suggestions that Michael Carrick’s squad is missing a number of key positions, including on the wing and in attack, all purchases of attacking players have been put on ice. Instead, the Red Devils are poised to accelerate their plans to sign new defensive players in the mid-season window, with a left-back and centre-back currently high on the list.”
