Last week came the totally surprising signing of Youri Tielemanns. A reinforcement that is now being highly anticipated, a player who has shown he thrives – and delivers – in the world’s toughest league. So when an 18-year-old United supporters have barely heard of, is applauded as a new Man Utd player on Monday, it was received with a shrug of the shoulders by the supporters. That is, those who have no knowledge of Tynan Thompson’s potential.
English media outlet Unitedinfocus gives United supporters a summary of what they can expect from the 18-year-old: “On the surface, an 18-year-old striker who didn’t get a place in the first team of Spurs doesn’t get first-team minutes at Old Trafford.”

“However, this is not an ordinary teenage figure. Tynan Thompson’s style of play is such that he can surprise anyone. United entered this market with the intention of strengthening themselves on the left wing, but a raw 18-year-old from the Spurs academy was no solution to that position.”
“Thompson played for the Spurs U18 team last season in a productive season, with 22 goals and 12 assists in 55 games in various competitions.”
“He is a modern attacking winger who likes to start on the left wing, from where he can cut inwards and unleash shots with his stronger right foot. One of the things that would have impressed Man Utd, however, is his two-legged skills, because he is just as capable of varying it and going above and beyond to beat his man.”
“This makes him a nightmare to defend against, as he only assists by getting to the city line like a traditional winger if he’s not allowed to cut in. With a height of 185 cm, he also has the raw tools to become an athletic asset, although his physical fitness needs some work. Something important that stands out when you look at him is how he dribbles. He tends to glide across the pitch with extreme close control.”

“He’s not a fancy winger in the traditional sense, but his agility and close-up control make him a joy to watch. He will have to work on his defensive contribution, but it will come with time and coaching. There is no better coach who can bring him with him than Michael Carrick, who did it with Morgan Rogers at Middlesbrough, says the English medium.
