Manchester United are in the process of strengthening further, and now they could be about to capture one of England’s best players from the World Cup. The transfer will then be one of the biggest bombshells of the summer.
While the rebuild under Michael Carrick continues in full swing, Manchester United have already secured four new players this summer. Now everything indicates that they are not finished – on the contrary.
Betting on Martin Ødegaard and “frighteningly good” Antonio Nusa” as the Premier League’s new radar pair
According to several reports, United have taken an interest in England and Spurs defender Djed Spence – and it could be one of the most sensational transfers this summer.
Became one of the World Cup stars
Spence was one of the surprise squads in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup in North America, but the surprise didn’t last long. He turned out to be one of England’s very best players throughout the tournament, where they eventually took bronze.
The 25-year-old played a whopping eight games and impressed greatly with his versatility – he operated as both a left-back and right-back, and showed that he can cover several positions at a high level.
After his World Cup performances, Spence’s value has skyrocketed, and according to Football Insider , Manchester United have really opened their eyes to him.
Carrick has seen enough – now he wants Spence
Michael Carrick in particular is said to have been thrilled by what he saw from Spence at the World Cup, and now United are considering making a move.
It’s not just United who have taken a liking to the full-back giant. Both Everton and Inter Milan have also shown interest, but Spurs have reportedly set a price tag of as much as £40 million – and that has caused Inter to pull out.
Could leave Spurs – after breaking up with Di Zerbi
According to Italian sources, Spence has been told that he is not part of Roberto Di Zerbi’s plans for next season. Tottenham have already spent a staggering £237 million on the likes of Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Matheus Fernandes – who was also a target for United – and it seems that Spence is on his way out.
The Tottenham supporters’ own Alisdair Gold, however, is quite clear in his speech:
“The price tag is rumoured to be £25 million, and that’s absolutely insane. Completely insane. First of all, they shouldn’t sell him at all. Have two good players in each position – that’s the best strategy,” Gold says on YouTube.
“But 25 million?” They bought him themselves for 20 million. He has three years left on his contract, and he has just delivered a sensational World Cup. Just don’t, Tottenham. Don’t do it.
United fan from before?
Djed Spence also seems to have a good eye on Manchester United from before. In a post on X from 2019, he wrote: “CMON @ManUtd” – which may indicate that he is already a United supporter. (I know it’s a bit thin)
Now it could be relevant for him to actually play for his dream club – if Tottenham let him go.
New names already in the door
United have already secured Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, Karl Darlow and Tynan Thompson this summer. In addition, they have brought in Andy Robertson, Marco Senesi and Martin Dubravka on free transfers – so it is clear that Carrick and the management believe more pieces are needed in place.
The question now is whether Djed Spence will be number five – and if so, whether United are willing to meet Spurs’ demands.
Roma would rather have Andreas Schjelderup than Mason Greenwood
