Most agree that Mason Mount’s time at Old Trafford has been a big disappointment.
Mason Mount has been given a career save away from Manchester United – from a club that is trying to complete the most ambitious transfer in its modern history. Mount has been a big disappointment at Old Trafford since joining from Chelsea in a move worth £55 million in 2023.
The 27-year-old midfielder struggled with a number of injuries in his debut season, and he only managed to find a brief period of good form under Rúben Amorim.

But Amorim’s long-awaited departure, the arrival of Michael Carrick, as well as further injury issues, once again put a stop to Mount’s progress. He has started 11 Premier League games this season – his only start in 2026 came in last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Sunderland.
United’s qualification for next season’s Champions League will see Mount’s already high salary increase further – as does the rest of the Red Devils squad. According to teamTALK, United are open to letting Mount leave the club in the summer, as they try to rebuild their entire midfield.
United management is aware that any transfer for Mount is likely to be a loan, given his salary, with a permanent transfer in 2027 being a more realistic scenario.
Manchester Mount gets a career save
Coventry City is one of the clubs looking to loan Mount and give him the long-awaited playing time.
Under the leadership of Frank Lampard, Coventry are preparing for their first season back in the Premier League since 2000/2001. After winning the Championship, Lampard will have significant funds to strengthen his squad.
Lampard worked with Mount at both Derby County and Chelsea earlier in his career, and even predicted that he would become a regular part of England’s national team squad.
Back in 2019, he told reporters:
“I’ve said it a lot over the past year. To be selected for the national team – hopefully that will come quite soon.
“He can definitely reach all the way to the top. I don’t want to put expectations on him. But I say it to him every day because I really mean it. When someone is as humble and hardworking as him, it doesn’t matter.
“You can tell him, because it will never stop his drive or hunger. He’s not a boy who wants all the crazy stuff outside of football.
United will already let Casemiro move on when his contract expires, while Manuel Ugarte is expected to be sold after failing to convince.
Among the names on United’s wish list for a midfield rebuild are Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Ederson.
