At a press conference on Friday, the 44-year-old – who has been in temporary charge since January – said that there should soon be a solution to his future.

An announcement before Sunday’s final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest is not ruled out.

The contract will probably include an option for one additional year.

When asked directly about the situation during the press conference, Carrick replied:

“My future will soon be decided. We knew that.

Negotiations are ongoing – appointment a matter of time

The fact that negotiations are underway – after CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox recommended Carrick’s appointment as minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe – is a strong sign that his inauguration as the permanent successor to Rúben Amorim is only a matter of time.

Most of the players have supported Carrick for the job, and the majority of supporters also believe that the former England midfielder has earned the role. He has won 10 of his 15 league games as a coach and secured a place in next season’s Champions League.

United only need one point from their last two games to be absolutely sure of third place.

Carrick has also been selected on a six-man list for the Premier League Manager of the Year award.

Saying goodbye to Casemiro – and giving a speech to the supporters

Carrick confirmed that 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will be available for his farewell match at Old Trafford. He also said that he intends to follow the tradition started by his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson – and give a speech to supporters after the game against Forest.

“It’s important anyway,” he said.

“The supporters are a big part of this club. We want to thank them for the season – and the last four months for me personally.

“Whatever happens, considering what we’ve been through and the connection the players have felt, it’s important for me to thank the fans for that.
