David Ornstein confirms Florentino Pérez’s unthinkable top pick as the next Real Madrid manager
The Real Madrid president has picked his biggest dream candidate to take over at the Bernabéu – and it would be a pure celebration.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has chosen his top candidate to replace Álvaro Arbeloa as manager, and no one could have seen this coming. Just three months after the previous manager Xabi Alonso left his position as Real Madrid manager, the Spanish giants are now on the hunt for a new coach.
Since taking over from Alonso in January, current Real Madrid manager Arbeloa has failed to impress and is expected to be sacked at the end of the season.
Several big names have been linked with the job at the Bernabéu, including former Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp, and Real Madrid president Pérez is reportedly personally involved in the decision.
And it seems that Pérez has made up his mind. David Ornstein has revealed that Pérez has instead chosen a completely different Premier League legend: José Mourinho.
Pérez runs the show – Mourinho is the man
According to The Athletic, unlike previous coaching appointments, it is Pérez himself who drives the process of deciding who will be Madrid’s next coach.
This is good news for Mourinho, as the Real Madrid president is reportedly very keen to get him back to the Bernabéu – despite other managers at the club being against the idea.
Between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho led Real Madrid to three trophies, including the La Liga title in 2011/12, and set a new points record.
Pérez is also said to be passionate about seeing Mourinho lift the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid – the only major accolade he failed to win in his previous spell at the club.
Mourinho could break contract – with a €3 million clause
The 63-year-old is currently the manager of Portuguese club Benfica, which he joined in September on a contract that lasts until June 2027.
However, the report claims that the deal contains a breach clause of approximately 3 million euros. It allows either Mourinho or Benfica to break the deal within ten days of the last game of the season.
Benfica will play their last game of the season against G.D. Estoril Praia on May 16. This means that Mourinho’s eventual departure must take place sometime between May 6 and May 26.
