It is one of Liverpool’s most important players who GMS writes will not get a new contract from Liverpool’s new sporting director Julian Ward.
Ward faces several big decisions this season. – Liverpool, who have been given a good gap to the top of the Premier League, already host Brighton at home at Anfield tomorrow, Sunday.
Must pay €24 million for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery
Liverpool have enjoyed great success in recent years, with two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph. But the first signs that the club was moving on from this era came in the summer when both Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah left Anfield.
Before next summer, Liverpool will have to decide whether to extend the contracts of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, whose deals expire at the end of the season.
Both players have been crucial to the club’s success on Merseyside and would be heavy losses. At the same time, they are two of the club’s highest-paid players, and Ward and Andoni Iraola will have to discuss how big of a role they will actually play if they stay after the 2026/27 season.
Liverpool will also be desperate to commit Rio Ngumoha to a new contract in the coming weeks and months. The 18-year-old put in a sensational performance in the 4-3 win against Villarreal in the Champions League this week.
The teenager was almost unplayable offensively as he showed off his dribbling skills, and he has the quality to be a starter in Liverpool’s eleven for many years to come.

The situation in midfield is even more interesting
Liverpool have already given Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai new long-term contracts in 2026.
Their midfield partner Mac Allister publicly revealed that he was “saddened” after being told by the club that they would not offer him a new contract this summer. According to Jacobs, who spoke on the latest episode of GMS’ Market Madness podcast, the club’s attitude has not changed.
“With Alexis Mac Allister, the goal, for now at least, is not to offer him another deal. Mac Allister said he’s disappointed with that, but Liverpool will be looking for at least one midfielder in 2027,” Jacobs said.
Mac Allister remains a key player for Liverpool and started eight of the team’s 11 games this season.
Liverpool identify midfield targets
In Market Madness , Ben Jacobs also revealed three midfield goals Liverpool are considering when strengthening their midfield in 2027.
The Reds did not replace Curtis Jones after his move to Inter Milan, and there are clear doubts as to whether Mac Allister will still be a Liverpool player in the 2027/28 season.
Timeline of key events:
- June 2023: Liverpool signed world champion Mac Allister from Brighton for an initial sum of £35 million.
- August 2023: The Argentina player was sent off on his home debut against Bournemouth at Anfield.
- February 2024: He won his first Liverpool trophy as Chelsea lost the Carabao Cup final.
- April 2025: He scored in the 5–1 win over Tottenham that secured Liverpool’s 20th league title.
- September 2026: The midfielder admitted that he was sad not to get a new contract, saying that he could have left the club.
It seems certain that at least one player will arrive at Anfield. Jacobs suggests the most likely midfield options as things stand.
“We know they like Alex Scott, but Chelsea consider themselves, at least for the winter market, the favourites. You have Lamine Camara, who I exclusively exposed, and Manu Kone, who also has supporters within the Anfield hierarchy,” he says.
It was revealed that clubs may have to spend over £100 million to sign Scott from Bournemouth in January. However, the south coast club’s stance could potentially change following his recent injury. Liverpool also reportedly told Camara on transfer day that he was high on the list for 2027, should his move to Chelsea collapse.
Ward and Iraola, who know Scott well from his time as manager of the Cherries, must now decide which way to go.
Scott offers Premier League experience, but Kone has established himself as one of the best in his position in Serie A and for France, while Camara is one of the most highly-rated young central midfielders in Europe.
Meanwhile, it is clear that Mac Allister’s Liverpool career, as things stand, could come to an end if he is not offered a new contract.
