Arne Slot was clearly annoyed when Liverpool supporters met him and the players with pipe concerts last season. Doesn’t anyone remember the Premier League title in his debut season after replacing Champion Klopp himself?! The Liverpool management gave the Dutchman confidence right up until the last game in May. Then the trust was gone. Slot was thanked for his efforts, but weighed too lightly despite the Premier League title and Champions League ticket last season. Now Jamie Carragher is putting it a little more into perspective.

Andoni Iraola led Liverpool in his first Premier League game for the Reds at the weekend, a game that, thanks to a penalty late into injury time, saved points in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle. After the game, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher gave an analysis that says Arne Slot should not be blamed for the weak last season.

Liverpool spent well over two hundred million pounds on Florian Wirtz and Isak, in addition to Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Hugo Ekitike were bought for significant sums.

-Yes, there is one game with Iraola (as coach), but we are talking about 12 months of underperformance from all these players except him (Ekitike). If that doesn’t change in the next two or three months under Iraola, and these players don’t improve, I think we’re going to look back on this as maybe the worst transfer window we’ve ever seen in Premier League history, when you consider the transfer fees for these players and what they were supposed to accomplish for Liverpool. Carragher continues, fires Carragher on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

Who is no longer so sure that it was Arne Slot who showed signs of weakness.

“Don’t forget that last year it wasn’t about these players. You (Gary Neville) said yesterday that these players have gotten away cheaply and you’re right, because it was all about Arne Slot and his style of play, that he’s not like Jürgen Klopp and that he’s holding these players back,” Carragher continued.

“The idea with these players wasn’t just that they would come in and be good players, it was to create a little dynasty for Liverpool. Let’s not forget that Liverpool won the league two years ago – these were expected to do what City have done in recent years, or United, where they win two or three league titles in five years, says a humming Liverpool legend.

Arne Slot surely got to see both the first Premier League game with Iraola and Carragher’s statement.
