Real Madrid are not set up to crash out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals – especially not against city rival Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid are also not set up to be nine points behind arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga, with seven games left. Although Xabi Alonso was in charge for the first part of the season, Alvaro Arbelao’s last few games have ensured that he does not get the coaching job from next season. Now an “old acquaintance” is signing up for the world’s biggest coaching job at club level.

Mauricio Pochettino has previously been linked with the Real Madrid job, in 2022 the answer from the Argentine was: “Sometimes it’s just about timing. However, I don’t think you only get the opportunity once.” According to The Athletic , Pochettino is now one of the candidates for Real president Florentino Perez, who is said to be a big fan of the former Tottenham coach.

It’s all about timing,” Pochettino stated four years ago. After the World Cup finals, Poch is without a contract as national team coach of the United States, where Roberto de Zerbi has taken the Tottenham job (Spurs fans had hoped the favourite Pochettino would get).

Sounds like perfect timing for Pochettino to be considered for the Real Madrid job. The Argentine has stated earlier this year that he wants to return to the Premier League, but the Real job probably surpasses that.
