AC Milan picked up their first win in four games on Sunday. The win was much needed for the team and not least head coach Ruben Amorim, who had started to see some of the same tendencies that were causing him problems at Manchester United. United fans probably remember the Portuguese best for his steadfast “I’ll never change”. AC Milan fans have experienced something similar, but now the “I’ll never change” Amorim has actually realized he has to adapt to reality.
In the Premier League, there was a formation that gave loss, after loss, after loss. Immediately after Michael Carrick came in in January and changed the formation, the victories came.

On Sunday, the victory came for a pressured Amorim, after 3-0 against Lecce there was an unusual admission from the coach.
“We have had problems in the last few games because the structure has been very fixed in the positions. But today (Sunday) the players got a little more freedom and then they played better. What I have experienced in the last few games is the same as I experienced at Manchester United and I must not make the same mistake again,” Amorim said.

Ahead of the Lecce game, he was therefore prepared to change course.
“Sometimes we don’t have the right players to play the way I want, and if we don’t have them, we have to adapt. I think it worked today. In another game, we can easily go back to building the game with three players (in the back row). The most important thing is that we have different ways of playing,” Amorim concludes.
Wow! For those who have followed Amorim’s 14 months as Manchester United coach, these are somewhat unbelievable statements from the Portuguese. Here comes both an admission that he blundered at United – and that he has learned.
