The former Manchester United manager was recently hired as AC Milan manager. Now he wants to bring one of his old favourites to Italy – a player he once called “the future of the team”.

Ruben Amorim is ready to bring one of Manchester United’s current stars to his new club, AC Milan. The Portuguese is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of his first Serie A season.

Plans for the start of the season which in Serie A is August 22.

Amorim was hired as Milan coach in June, after having been out of work since January, when he was fired at Manchester United. He left United after what was interpreted as a showdown with the club’s management, following a 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

He was replaced by then-interim manager Michael Carrick, who then led United to third place in the Premier League and secured Champions League play. Now Amorim will try to lead the Rossoneri to success after finishing fifth in Serie A last season.

Ruben Amorim is in place at the San Siro and has completed his first training and meeting with the players this weekend.

Wants to reunite with Moroccan full-back

To bolster the squad, Amorim seems to want to reunite with one of his former players – someone he once called “the future of the team” during his Manchester United era.

According to Italian Matteo Moretto, who spoke on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, Amorim is interested in signing Moroccan right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

“Noussair Mazraoui is one of Amorim’s favourites. As of now, there are no negotiations going on, and there is no direct contact between the clubs,” says Moretto.

“But what I can say is that Mazraoui – who is 28 years old and has a contract until 2028, with an option for another year – is a player Amorim values very highly. We’ll see if Milan go for him later in the window. As of today, I’m talking about the manager’s approval – Amorim greatly appreciates Mazraoui’s qualities.

Since joining United from Bayern Munich for £17 million in 2024, the full-back has made 77 appearances. Still, he has struggled to secure a permanent place under Carrick, who seems to prefer Diogo Dalot on the right.

Mazraoui, who was part of Morocco’s squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, has a contract with United until 2028 – with an option for a further year.

Amorim’s true feelings for Mazraoui

Despite falling in the hierarchy under Carrick, Amorim has already made it clear that he values the 28-year-old for his versatility – especially his ability to play in a back five.

In 2024, Amorim described Mazraoui as a “top player”:

“He understands the game. He knows how to attack, he’s very technical, he’s very good defensively and he’s very good in one-on-one situations. He is a modern player. I think he is the future of our team. When you think about him, you think we need more players like Nous – who can control the pace. They are really good and confident with the ball. So, Nous – I’m very happy with him.

It has also been reported that Amorim is interested in Mason Mount, Amad Diallo and Manuel Ugarte – but the latter is likely to remain at Old Trafford after suffering a knee injury during the World Cup with Uruguay.

The transfer window closes on September 1 at 23:00.

This could be Bayern Munich’s starting eleven for the 2026/27 season
