During the international break, Florian Wirtz got a big boost. First, Spain’s national team coach hails him as the player on the German national team as a “fantastic player” who would prefer to have a Spanish passport. Then Jürgen Klopp gives the 23-year-old the responsibility as captain of Die Mannschaft in the Nations League with Kimmich out. Back in the Liverpool shirt, Jamie Carragher continues to give the German player a torment. Heavy torment.
The Liverpool legend, who earns around a million pounds to make football headlines for Sky Sports, once again addressed Wirtz’s performances, or lack thereof, in the 0-3 thrashing at Anfield against Manchester City. It was Ryan Gravenberch’s sending off that was the direct cause of City hammering in three goals, the first by Haaland, but for Carragher, it is Wirtz who is the weak link at Liverpool.

“I was criticised by Liverpool supporters for what I said about Wirtz after the Bournemouth game, but I said there was hope, considering that Jurgen Klopp can put his arm around him and get the best out of him at the national team gathering,” Carragher begins on Sky Sports.
“He played very well under Klopp and then he comes here today. We have no Isak and no Gakpo and we need Wirtz and Barcola to step up and help Munoz and Koumas. Those two were better than the players who were bought for £100m. It can’t be like that. It’s not right,” Carragher grumbled.

Who believes Iraola must do the opposite of Klopp.
“What Florian Wirtz is doing for Liverpool is not enough. He shouldn’t be playing for Liverpool right now. We don’t make judgments after four or five games, but after 50-60 games. It never looks like he’s going to score goals. You never get the feeling that he’s created chances or tested the goalkeeper. Never today was there a moment where he could have played someone through. There’s no goal threat,” Carragher concluded.
