St. Pauli lost 3-1 at home at the Millerntor-Stadion to Wolfsburg in the decisive round of the season – and are thus relegated from the Bundesliga. Wolfsburg also saved the qualifying place after the dramatic bottom meeting.

It was a fateful end to the Bundesliga’s bottom battle. – And at the top of the table, as usual Bayern Munich.

Before the final round, St. Pauli, Wolfsburg and Heidenheim all stood on the same number of points. Everything was to be decided during 90 nerve-wracking minutes at the Millerntor-Stadion in Hamburg.

The starting point was crystal clear: St. Pauli were in the direct relegation place, while Wolfsburg were in the qualification place. Only goal difference separated the teams before kick-off.

Mattias Svanberg played from the start for Wolfsburg. St. Pauli, on the other hand, had to do without their Swedish key player Eric Smith, who sat out the game due to illness.

For the home team, the evening ended in great disappointment.

Wolfsburg took the lead

Wolfsburg took the lead in the 37th minute after a corner kick from Christian Eriksen. Konstantinos Koulierakis rose highest inside the penalty area and headed in 1-0 behind Nikola Vasilj.

But the equalizer came in the second half.

In the 57th minute, Connor Metcalfe’s corner kick reached Abdoulie Ceesay, who headed in a 1-1 draw from close range.

The decisive setback

Just seven minutes later, the heavy blow came for the home team.

Wolfsburg pressed on, and after a situation that was first checked by VAR, the visitors were awarded 2-1 – after an own goal by St. Pauli goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

St. Pauli chased a late equalizer towards the end, but it never came.

Wolfsburg held off and punctuated the game on the eve of the game when they made it 3-1. In doing so, they secured 16th place in the Bundesliga, which means that the club will have to play relegation qualification to try and stay in the top division.

For St. Pauli, the loss was far heavier.

The result means that the club is relegated straight out of the Bundesliga after the dramatic end of the season.
