The Liverpool legend could finally be ready for a return to the coaching bench, and he should be ready to work with a big club.

Steven Gerrard has been linked with one of the biggest jobs in the EFL, amid rumours that he could soon be back as manager.

It is now almost two years since Premier League legend Gerrard last worked as a manager, after he left Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in January 2025.

In addition to Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard has also been manager of Rangers and Aston Villa – and now new reports suggest that he could be ready for a new British club. According to these, he is open to replacing Phil Parkinson at Wrexham.

Steven Gerrard open to replacing Phil Parkinson at Wrexham
For over five years, Parkinson has led Wrexham from a small Welsh club in the National League all the way up to the Championship. Along the way, he has become a household name – not least thanks to the big Hollywood acquisition from actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Despite this, Parkinson is now under heavy pressure. Wrexham have had a disappointing start to the season and are in 17th place ahead of Saturday’s must-win game against Preston.

The club have only won two out of ten games this season. Should Wrexham also fail against Preston, it could easily be Parkinson’s last game as manager – and Gerrard is reportedly ready to step in as his replacement if asked.

According to TalkSPORT, Gerrard is one of the names sporting director Steve Nickson is considering, and the Liverpool legend is said to be “open” to taking the job at Wrexham.

Since leading Rangers to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, Gerrard’s managerial career has been demanding. He was sacked after eleven months at Aston Villa, leaving Al-Ettifaq after a disappointing 18-month stay.

However, now that he has had some time away from the pitch, it seems that Gerrard finally feels that the time has come to return to the coaching bench – with Wrexham being a potential opportunity to work with a big club.

Steven Gerrard on managerial future after Wrexham rumours
Just weeks before rumours about Gerrard and Wrexham began to swirl, the 46-year-old spoke about his time as manager and any plans to work at a new club.

On the Overlap Daily podcast, he admitted that he perhaps should have gained more managerial experience at Aston Villa, but that he doesn’t regret taking a Premier League job so early in his coaching career.

At the same time, he admitted that he is enjoying his time away from the grass – without ruling out that he could be back soon if the right opportunity arises.

“I look better, don’t I? No stress, the grey hairs have started to calm down. My work and life balance is very good right now. I’m really happy where I am. Don’t want to be anywhere else,” Gerrard said in the latest episode of Overlap Daily, presented by Sky Bet.

“But even if I had a job now and came in to do this as a one-time thing, I wouldn’t close a media door or any other door. I’m always someone who never closes doors, keeps everything open and lives in the moment.

“I don’t know what the future holds in one, two, three or four years, but I have accepted this and am really excited.

About his time as manager, he added:

“It’s not easy to be a coach. It’s not easy. It’s a tough job. It’s a different role than being a player.

“Different pressures, different stresses. It’s around the clock, and that’s something people have to be aware of when they choose a coaching career. It’s a completely different thing.
