Manchester City could face a huge penalty from UEFA if the appeal against the ruling of 114 financial violations is not successful.
The English club has been locked in a legal battle with the Premier League since February 2023. In September 2026, they received both a devastating statement from the league and a ruling declaring them guilty.

Manchester City’s £1 billion nightmare could get even worse
City are accused of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018. Since the appeal has been filed and the club maintains that they are innocent, everyone is now waiting for the final outcome.
Manchester City could face long UEFA ban
If the ruling stands, the next hurdle will be what sanctions will be imposed on the eight-time Premier League champions. Sanctions that have been discussed include hefty fines, transfer bans, points deductions, revoked titles and even relegation.
The Premier League will act immediately, since the club’s future in English football will have priority. But it will also put UEFA in a position where they will have to make a decision.
City could theoretically work their way back to the Premier League if they are relegated first, and then start competing for Champions League, Europa League or Conference League qualification again.
But Colombian journalist Cesar Augusto Londono has claimed on social media that Europe’s football association UEFA is ready to impose a lengthy ban on the reigning Champions League winners from 2023.
“UEFA is reportedly close to announcing that if Manchester City are found guilty following the appeal, they will be banned from all European competitions for a period of 7 to 10 years. Under this arrangement, they will not be able to participate in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. The club was found guilty of 115 financial violations in the first instance.”
If that is the outcome, it means that City will not be eligible to play European Cup football for up to a decade – regardless of the punishment from the Premier League.
Alan Brazil ‘varnished’ Manchester City’s penalty
Although any sanctions will have to wait until the appeal is processed, people in the media and the football world have already discussed what they have heard.
TalkSPORT presenter and former Scotland international Alan Brazil shared what he had been told about City’s Premier League penalty. In early October, Brazil said that a 60-point point deduction had been proposed for him:
“I’m hearing about a 60-point deduction, which will please people and still give Manchester City a chance to survive.
I don’t know if it’s this season. I can’t see how it could be this season because of the timing – by the time they get it through, it’ll be too late. Is it next season? But they’re talking about a 60-point point deduction.”
