Wrexham’s Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have had an adventurous journey with coach Phil Parkinson, a journey that has sent the club from the amateur league to the second division. This, of course, has already given Parkinsen legend status at the club, but the challenge is that the “Welcome to Wrexham” concept requires Welcome to the Premier League – and quickly.
The club’s ambitions have continued to grow in tandem with the extraordinary recovery, with Teamtalk’s sources reporting that management is increasingly focused on reaching the Premier League as quickly as possible. According to the English media, Reynolds and McElhenney are said to be reluctant to sack Parkinson, but there is growing concern behind the scenes as to whether the current coaching regime can deliver the ultimate goal.

Wrexham are currently in 17th place in the Championship, with just two wins from their first 10 games. They are already 10 points behind the automatic promotion places despite another significant summer of investment. That start has increased the pressure on Parkinson.
If Wrexham decide that a change is necessary, Teamtalk’s sources claim that Steven Gerrard is ready to step into the role, a challenge the Liverpool icon enjoys. Gerrard has quite a job to do to rectify his reputation as a coach, after the foolish exit to Saudi Arabian football, which also ended in failure and sacking.

Sources indicate that the prospect of taking over at the Racecourse Ground would appeal to the Liverpool-born coach, Wrexham’s resources, profile and Premier League aspirations make the role attractive. For the club, hiring a figure of Gerrard’s calibre would represent a significant statement of intent in trying to turn their Championship aspirations into a genuine boost for promotion.
