Barcelona confirms Flick deal he has, after all, won La Liga two years in a row while the club’s financial situation puts restrictions – will stay until 2028

Hansi Flick will lead Barcelona for at least two more seasons.

Barcelona have confirmed that head coach Hansi Flick has extended his contract with the club until 2028, with an option for a further year.

The news of the deal leaked out already last week, but on Monday the club made it official.

Flick took over the helm in 2024, and since then, the German has delivered an adventurous period in Catalonia. Last week, Barcelona secured the La Liga title for the second season in a row – after a classic Clásico victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid. Flick also led the team to victory in the Copa del Rey last season.

But there is one trophy he has so far not been able to get his hands on since arriving in Barcelona: the Champions League. After last year’s semi-final loss, Barcelona followed up by being knocked out by Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals this season.

Now he will have at least two more seasons to break Barca’s Champions League drought – a trophy the club has not won since 2015. After all, Flick has won it before. He did it in 2020 with Bayern Munich.

Flick: “A perfect deal”

In a statement last week, after it became known that he had reached an agreement with Barcelona over the extension, Flick said:

“I’m really happy about this. They have given me and my team the confidence to work for one or two more years.

“Many coaches would be happy to get a contract for three, four or five years, but in Barcelona’s case it’s good to limit it. I really appreciate it.

“We’ll go to 2028, and then we’ll see if everything is right. In that case, we can decide on one more year. The club is right, and I’m right – I think this is a good deal.

Barcelona beat Real Betis 3-1 in their last home game of the season on Sunday. On Saturday, they end the season with an away game against Valencia.
