After the heartbreaking semi-final loss to Argentina, Thomas Tuchel has given an emotional speech to the squad – demanding a strong finish against France.

England’s manager gathered the players as they returned to base in Kansas City after another dramatic exit. The message was clear: put the disappointment behind you – and deliver one last performance in the bronze final.

Tuchel also told the squad how proud he was of his efforts throughout the championship. Leading England to just their fourth men’s World Cup semi-final is no small feat. A win over France in Miami would secure England’s best World Cup finish since they lifted the trophy in 1966.

“It was never the plan to sit deep”

The speeches come after a turbulent few days for Tuchel. England’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina – in which Lionel Messi inspired a late comeback – has sparked waves of criticism.

Reports suggest that several experienced players became frustrated with the team’s approach after Anthony Gordon sent England into the lead. England switched to a five-back line and made several defensive changes in the closing minutes – before Enzo Fernández equalised and Lautaro Martínez headed in the winning goal in injury time.

Tuchel has since denied that his instructions were the reason for the withdrawal. He insisted that sitting deep was never the plan, admitting that controlling games after taking the lead “may not be in our DNA … to control the game and the ball”.

Full confidence from the FA

Despite the criticism, Tuchel still enjoys the full support of the English Football Association. The 52-year-old signed a two-year contract extension in February – after first being hired in January 2025 on an 18-month contract with the goal of winning the World Cup in 2026.

He is expected to lead England into Euro 2028, which is being held in collaboration between England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

During Friday’s press conference before the bronze final, Tuchel was asked several questions about his tactical decisions. But one message is clear: England must end the World Cup tournament in the best possible way.
