On Friday, the United bosses confirmed their choice: Michael Carrick was the right man for the job in January and is also from the coming season. The former Man Utd midfield star knows all about what needs to be in a midfielder – and in the mix of midfielders. This week, the first reinforcement is on its way to signing, but the really big signing is also on track.

First to the safe. On Friday, Ederson did not play in Atalanta’s last Serie A game, the coach confirmed he is on his way to the top club. This top club is Manchester United. This looks set to be Carrick’s first signing. According to renowned transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, work is also being done intensively on Carrick’s favourite, a signing that will signal the way forward with Carrick at the helm.

According to the transfer journalist, Carrick has “specifically wanted” Sandro Tonali as his first signing as permanent United head coach, and wants the club to prioritise that deal before moving on to Ederson. It should be “reassuring” at United that they can complete both summer transfers, Tonali has been a long-term target.

According to Di Marzio, there is “a good chance that the deal will go through” for Tonali, with the transfer ending at around £87 million.
