“He would have played much better for us”

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness believes the German club would use Florian Wirtz far more effectively than Liverpool do – while the midfielder is again showing promise in his last game. – Liverpool won 2 – 0 over Brighton at Anfield at the weekend and climbed up to 4th place in the Premier League.

Wirtz was on the radar of Bayern and several other big clubs when he left for Liverpool in 2025. Since his weak debut season, he has still been linked with them, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

The German midfielder has had far better results in recent games than fans are used to seeing this season – and Bayern links have emerged during that good period.

President Hoeness was asked by Welt am Sonntag if the club is happy they didn’t sign Wirtz, as he hasn’t shown his best level at Anfield.

He answered:

“No, because Florian would have played much better for us than he does now at Liverpool.

I watch a lot of their games. They haven’t integrated him properly at all. At Leverkusen, he received every single ball. At Liverpool, he’s just one of many.”

Whether Bayern have a direct interest in bringing Wirtz to the club in the midst of this hint is unclear.

Wirtz in top form lately

Wirtz has shown good form for Liverpool since the international break.

In five games since he left to play for Germany, Wirtz has scored one goal, provided two assists – and got a shot into the Brighton net via Seagulls player Pascal Gross on Sunday.

In the last four games – in which he has had a direct hand in four goals, although one was an own goal 🙂 – Wirtz has had FotMob ratings of 8.6 against LASK, 8.7 against Brentford and Villarreal and 7.1 against Brighton.

In the last of those games, Wirtz created two chances and made six passes in the final third, as well as nine line-breaking passes.

It wasn’t his best all-round performance in recent weeks, but the German distributed the ball to his teammates in an excellent way.

On one occasion, he made a first pass out to the left wing and found Cody Gakpo directly – one of his highlights. While it was one of Wirtz’s quieter games lately, it was still a very promising one – especially since he was in a good position to get a shot that found its way into the net.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso wants to reunite with Wirtz, although Liverpool are keen to see the midfielder train at Anfield – and recent performances suggest that is entirely possible.
