Chelsea are interested in bringing Antonio Rüdiger back from Real Madrid next summer. Manager Xabi Alonso wants the German to bring experience and leadership to a youthful Chelsea defence.
Chelsea are in the process of laying out the roadmap for next season, and Real Madrid’s German centre-back Antonio Rüdiger is on their wish list. According to the British portal Football Insider, coach Xabi Alonso has asked the Stamford Bridge management to sign the German defender – to give weight to a defence that is mainly made up of young players.

Anyone who has followed Chelsea this season knows they need someone with experience, especially in defence.
Alonso knows Rüdiger well
The Spanish manager trained the centre-back last season at Real Madrid, and fully supports the operation. He believes the London squad needs a person with immediate management capacity to compete in the Premier League. Chelsea’s technical secretariat compares this manoeuvre to the signing of Thiago Silva back then, prioritising a proven defender who knows the British tournament and the club’s requirements.
In his previous spell in London between 2017 and 2022, Rüdiger played 203 official matches and won four titles: one Champions League, one Europa League, one European Super Cup and one FA Cup. This previous experience in England minimises adaptation time within the tactical structure Alonso is building for the 2027/28 season.
Real Madrid plans rejuvenation in defence
At the Santiago Bernabéu, the board is planning a restructuring of the central defence after Dean Huijsen joined in 2025 and Ibrahima Konaté in 2026. With an eye on the next summer transfer window, Real Madrid’s technical secretariat is considering bringing in the homegrown player Jacobo Ramón, who now plays for Italian Como, to complete the generational change in defence.
Under Jose Mourinho, the 33-year-old German defender is not an unwavering starter, but he has made six appearances at the start of the 2026/27 season and maintained a relevant position in the internal management of the dressing room. After renewing his contract for just one year last summer, Madrid management are not planning to make him another offer of an extension – which would pave the way for him to leave for free.
Negotiations start in January
Chelsea’s intermediaries will keep consultations open with the player’s representatives in January 2027 – the date when he can sign a binding pre-contract. If the parties agree on the salary demands, Chelsea will formalize the documentation to ensure Antonio Rüdiger’s return after five seasons at Real Madrid.
